HAVEN HOMEPLACE
In and Around Our Town

Welcome to Ashburnham, in North Central Massachusetts on the New Hampshire border, about half way between the Atlantic Ocean and the Connecticut River. (Half of the rivers that originate here flow east to the Atlantic – the other half west to the Connecticut River.) Originally named Dorchester, Canada, and awarded as land grants to soldiers, our town was incorporated and renamed Ashburnham in 1765 – 11 years before the nation declared independence from England.

Ashburnham offers many beautiful high-elevation lakes, rushing streams, scenic hiking trails, and fresh air. Elevation above sea level ranges from 881' in the southern part of Ashburnham to Mt Watatic in the north at 1,881'. We're just 10 minutes due north of 2000+ foot Mount Wachusett.

Victorian Architecture
like many homes near Cushing

In addition to the Cushing Academy's academic and residential buildings and beautiful grounds, the center of Ashburnham is packed with historic Victorian homes, reminders of its days as a prosperous furniture manufacturing center; a newly-renovated Town Hall; historic sites on Meetinghouse Hill; an abundance of lakes; and the Frederick Piano Collection – created to give musicians and music lovers a chance to hear works by major piano composers, played on pianos such as those the composers knew and for which their music was conceived. The period of pianos in the Collection extends from about 1790 to 1907, representing music from Haydn and Beethoven through the French Impressionists.
